Scope and Content Denny Iron Works, Glasgow Road, Denny, Falkirk This shows a crucible stove, used for pre-heating crucibles, like those on the shelf on the left, before they are filled with molten steel from the induction furnaces. The stove is covered by the hinged lid in the centre. The crucibles are made largely of graphite, because of its resistance to high temperatures. This firm was primarily a maker of agricultural machinery, especially ploughs and Cambridge rollers, and also made iron and steel castings as engineering components, for, among others, J & T Boyd, textile machinery makers, Glasgow. The iron founding industry was a speciality of the south-east corner of Stirlingshire, with the towns of Larbert, Denny, Falkirk and Bonnybridge all having several firms engaged in this business. The Denny Iron Works was founded in 1870, and belonged to Cruikshank & Co Ltd. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
