Scope and Content Glass bottle works, Baileyfield Road, Edinburgh This shows part of the Baileyfield Road frontage from the south-west. The works covered a large area, and had obviously been developed over many years. The building in the centre is one of the oldest in the complex; its purpose is not known. As can be seen the works, though closed, was still externally intact in 1971. It was demolished soon afterwards. United Glass, a subsidiary of United Distillers & Vintners, are now the only makers of glass bottles in Scotland in their Alloa works. This works was probably established in the mid-19th century to make bottles for the export trade in beer. In 1945 it was owned by Wood's Bottle Works (1920) Ltd. It was a relatively small concern, and was later taken over by United Glass, who concentrated their production in Alloa, closing this works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
