Scope and Content Iron warehouses and offices, Nos 37-41 Midland Street, Glasgow This shows the building from the north-west, with the Midland Street frontage to the left, and the Oswald Street frontage to the right. Part of Glasgow Central Station can be seen in the left background. The cart entry in the Oswald Street frontage gives access to a central well where the goods are kept. This type of business was becoming obsolete in 1970. It was then run by The Glasgow Engineers' Supplies Co Ltd. It closed in the 1970s, and the site has been redeveloped as a multi-storey car park, run in connection with the adjoining Glasgow Central railway station. This building was constructed in 1869 for John Stewart & Co, iron merchants. It was one of a number of warehouses in the centre of Glasgow where small engineering firms could buy iron and steel in small quantities, and also such requisites as nuts, bolts and rivets.
