Scope and Content Tea warehouse, Nos 55-7 Couper Street, Edinburgh This shows the Couper Street frontage of the building, with part of the Coburg Street façade to the left. This section of the complex housed the firm's administrative offices, hence the Baronial treatment. Like many Scottish firms Melroses succumbed to the development of mass-marketed tea and coffee. This warehouse has been converted into flats, with little alteration to its external appearance. This warehouse was built in 1900, probably for Melroses Ltd, tea and coffee merchants, who occupied it in 1970. Melroses had an extensive trade with retail grocers, and in 1945 had three of their own shops in Edinburgh. This warehouse was their headquarters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
