Scope and Content The Cooperage, Nos 1-31 Commercial Wharf, Leith, Edinburgh This shows the building from the south-east, with its central hoist, and private wharf on the Water of Leith. Note the barrels stored in front of and beside it. The upper floors were disused by the time this photograph was taken. The sheet piling on the left marks the site of an early dry dock. The front block of this building is one of the most elegant buildings in Leith. In 1979-80 the complex was reconstructed as flats, with a restaurant on the ground floor. The height of the rear block was raised to match that of the front range. This warehouse was built in the mid-19th century, probably as a store for imported grain. At a later date it became a bonded warehouse, as Bond 9. By 1970 it was being used as a cooperage for repairing whisky barrels, and known as Bond 9 Cooperage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
