Scope and Content Christmas card designed by Brian Hope-Taylor Brian Hope-Taylor designed his own cards for special occasions and this is an example of one of his Christmas cards. The card appears to be a reference to the passing of time. A ruined building, a small child holding an hour glass and an old man holding a scythe are the main figures in this image. The old man could be likened to the grim reaper or death. As a child Brian Hope-Taylor pursued an interest in acting and modelling, later studying wood-engraving with George Mackley. He combined field archaeology with work as a commercial artist, and is described as being 'distinguished both as an archaeologist and an artist'. Brian Hope-Taylor (1923-2001) was a remarkable archaeologist who did much to raise the standards of excavation and archaeological illustration in Britain. He pioneered excavation techniques on timber buildings and was especially noted for his work on Anglo-Saxon and early medieval sites in Scotland and England. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
