Scope and Content Skull from grave, Farthing Down, Surrey This is a view of a skull from one of the graves at Farthing Down. It belonged to a woman of about 20-25 years of age. Tooth enamel is one of the hardest substances in the human body and it can withstand many centuries of burial. Specialists can determine the age of an individual at death from preserved teeth. The study of the preserved dentition can also provide information on such things as diet, general health and even a person's place of origin. Farthing Down is an Anglo-Saxon cemetery dating to the late 6th/early 7th century. In 1945 Brian Hope-Taylor discovered Romano-British field systems in the same area. This research led to the 1948-9 excavations at the Anglo-Saxon cemetery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
