Scope and Content North Leith Passenger Station (1846-1947), Edinburgh Leith (North ) - ex Caledonian Railway This shows the front block from the north-east. It had been closed to passengers since 1947, and was being used as a coppersmiths' shop by Smith & McGowan. The overall roof at the rear had been removed. This station was built to serve traffic to the Leith Old Docks. The Caledonian Railway opened a station nearby in 1879, and the North British Railway, who had inherited this station, opened Leith Central Station in 1903. All three have now closed. This one is now a youth club. This station was built as the Leith terminus of the Edinburgh, Leith & Granton Railway, and opened in 1846. Behind the Classical street frontage was a single platform with an overall roof. The station was designed by Grainger & Miller. For many years, from 1952 onwards, it was known as Leith Citadel Goods Station. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
