Scope and Content Drawing of hogback, Abercorn, West Lothian This is a drawing of a Viking age hogbacked tombstone from Abercorn church, by Brian Hope-Taylor. This image forms part of an index compiled by Brian Hope-Taylor, in order to research these types of monuments. Hogbacks can be found in Northern England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Scandinavia. The purpose of these sculptures is a matter of debate, but much of the imagery used indicates that they were grave markers or some other kind of religious monument. However, the form this religion may have taken is open to debate, as the imagery employed is both pagan and Christian in content. Brian Hope-Taylor (1923-2001) was a remarkable archaeologist who did much to raise the standards of excavation and archaeological illustration in Britain. He pioneered excavation techniques on timber buildings and was especially noted for his work on Anglo-Saxon and early medieval sites in Scotland and England. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
