Scope and Content Main block from west-north-west, Floors Castle, Scottish Borders This shows the main block which has a heavily castellated parapet with four-storeyed and basement towers which have pepperpot turrets and ornate water spouts around the cornice. These features are repeated in the three-bayed covered porch (porte-cochère), in front of the house. Each bay of the porch is separated by a buttress and has a central corbel which is surmounted by a triangular pediment. William Playfair retained the original use of the main block which was to provide the family with bedrooms, and reception rooms to entertain guests. The family and their guests would have entered the castle through the porte-cochère, which was designed in such a way that anyone dismounting from a carriage was sheltered from the weather. The servants would only enter the castle via entrances in the stable and kitchen wings which were out of sight of the family. Floors Castle was built in 1718 for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe and was probably designed by John Vanburgh (1664-1726) with alterations by William Adam (1689-1748). The 6th Duke of Roxburghe commissioned William Playfair (1790-1857) to alter and extend the castle between 1838 and 1849. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
