Scope and Content Glamis Castle, Angus, from north-north-west This shows the castle from the north. The west block with its large three-storeyed tower is on the right with the tower-house rising above the other buildings. The three-storeyed and attic block adjoining the tower-house contains the chapel behind the small mullioned windows on the second floor. The block with the pointed windows contained the kitchen and the buildings to the left of this were completed in 1901. The 1901 block contained service rooms on the ground floor and servant rooms on the first and attic floors. The female servants had the use of one floor and the male servants had the use of the other. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
