Scope and Content Upper floors of tower-house from north-west, Glamis Castle, Angus This shows the upper floors of the tower-house which has a corbelled turret with a conical roof on the right and a corbelled cap-house on the left. The central bay has a crowstepped gable with an attic window and the upper two bays at each side have crowstepped dormer heads. Part of a three-storeyed and attic block which contains the chapel behind the mullioned windows can be seen on the left. The cap-house was originally used by a guard or lookout, but, by 1924, the room was used as a water closet (WC, or toilet) with a cistern room in the attic above. The other rooms in the attic were bedrooms where the servants slept and the floor below this also contained bedrooms and dressing rooms. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
