Scope and Content Sculptured stag, Gate Piers, Estate Outbuildings and Cottages, Duntrune Castle, Argyll & Bute This shows one of a pair of model stags which originally topped the courtyard gate piers of Poltalloch House and which now surmount the farm steading gate piers. The stag appears to have been carved out of stone with bronze antlers affixed to the head. The smooth finish of the sculpture would have complemented the smooth ashlar of the gate pier at the house but now contrasts with the rough texture of the steading's random-rubble gate pier. Muriel Malcolm redesigned the walled garden in the late 1950s and it was probably she or the family who instigated the relocation of the statues. In their original position at Poltalloch, the stags would have been impressive status symbols, and stags are the 'supporters' at each side of the family coat of arms. Duntrune Castle was built c.1600 on the shores of Loch Crinan and incorporates parts of an earlier structure. The building was renovated by the Malcolms of Poltalloch in c.1796, and Joseph G Davis undertook repairs and alterations to the castle between 1833 and 1835. The Malcolm family moved to the newly-built Poltalloch House in 1853 but returned to Duntrune in c.1953 when it was restored. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
