Scope and Content Aerial view of Duntrune Castle, Argyll & Bute This shows the main two-storeyed and attic block which has three sloping dormers in the centre. The two-storeyed block on the right contained a kitchen on the ground floor and bedrooms for the servants on the upper floor. The causeway (left) leads to a pier which was probably used by the family to moor boats for pleasure cruises or fishing trips around the loch. The gravel area to the right of the castle was where carriages dropped and collected family and guests. People would have dismounted from the carriages and walked along the path between the battlemented walls and into the courtyard from where access to the castle was gained. The servants would also have used this pathway as the courtyard gave access to the kitchen wing. Duntrune Castle was built c.1600 on the shores of Loch Crinan and incorporates parts of an earlier structure. The building was renovated by the Malcolms of Poltalloch in c.1796, and Joseph G Davis undertook repairs and alterations to the castle between 1833 and 1835. The Malcolm family moved to the newly-built Poltalloch House in 1853 but returned to Duntrune in c.1953 when it was restored. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
