Scope and Content Drawing showing Poltalloch House, Argyll & Bute This shows a plan for the house, which was probably executed c.1848. The main block is in the centre with the rectangular block to the left being the north-west wing. The stable court is marked on the top right and the kitchen court to the top centre. This drawing emphasises how the service wings contained large buildings that almost covered the same amount of ground as the main blocks of the house, and which were usually located to the rear of the main house. The family and guests would have travelled along the roadway (right centre) to the courtyard below the stable court, and entered the house through the large entrance in the main block. The servants probably used the roadway to the north (top) and entered the house via the kitchen and stables courts out of sight from the family and their guests. William Burn, 1789-1870, built Poltalloch House for the Malcolm family of Poltalloch between 1849 and 1853 in English Jacobean style and William A Nesfield, 1793-1881, designed the gardens. The roof of the house was removed in 1957 when the Malcolms moved to Duntrune Castle and the house has remained a ruin ever since. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
