Scope and Content Drawing of bridge and East Lodge, Poltalloch House, Argyll & Bute This shows a detailed drawing, probably executed by William Burn, showing the elevations of the East Lodge and the adjacent bridge. The two-storeyed lodge has gables with central finials and elaborately carved bargeboards around the eaves. The diamond-patterned stone parapet of the bridge is carried along the bank to the porch of the lodge. The gabled main entrance was designed with four two-paned windows but was constructed with only two. The bridge was designed with a pair of square piers but was built with four square piers topped with finials at each corner and the parapet was not joined to the lodge. William Burn (1789-1870) built Poltalloch House for the Malcolm family between 1849 and 1853 in an English Jacobean style, and William Andrews Nesfield (1793-1881) designed the gardens at the same time. The roof of the house was removed in 1957 when the Malcolms moved to Duntrune Castle and the house has remained a ruin ever since. William Burn also designed the bridge and East Lodge which was built between 1854 and 1855. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
