Scope and Content Drawing of bridge and East Lodge, Poltalloch House, Argyll & Bute This shows a detailed drawing, probably executed by William Burn, showing an elevation of the East Lodge and the adjacent bridge. The two-storeyed lodge has gables with bay windows on the ground floor and carved bargeboards around the eaves. The gabled main entrance is surmounted with a date stone and the bridge has a diamond-patterned balustrade with square piers nearest the cottage. The bridge was built with the ornate parapet but four square piers topped with finials were added to the original design. The decorative appearance of the bridge was because it was at the estate entrance and prominently on view to visitors. The bridge and lodge were designed to hint at the quality of the architecture of the main house and constructed in an architectural style favoured by the Malcolm family. William Burn (1789-1870) built Poltalloch House for the Malcolm family between 1849 and 1853 in an English Jacobean style, and William Andrews Nesfield (1793-1881) designed the gardens at the same time. The roof of the house was removed in 1957 when the Malcolms moved to Duntrune Castle and the house has remained a ruin ever since. William Burn also designed the bridge and East Lodge which was built between 1854 and 1855. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
