Scope and Content Poltalloch House and Gardens, Argyll & Bute, from south This shows the two-storeyed main block in the centre, with its balustraded cornice at roof level and curvilinear gables with finials at each side. The single-storeyed and attic east block (right) has a two-storeyed tower with a domed roof, six dormers and the main entrance also surmounted with a curvilinear gable. Part of the single- and two-storeyed north-west wing is visible on the left. The main block contained, on the ground floor, the library, dining and drawing rooms, where guests were entertained, with family bedrooms on the second floor. The east block contained stables on the ground floor with granaries and bedrooms for the grooms and stable servants in the attic. The north-west wing contained private rooms for the family. William Burn (1789-1870) built Poltalloch House for the Malcolm family between 1849 and 1853 in an English Jacobean style, and William Andrews Nesfield (1793-1881) designed the gardens at the same time. The roof of the house was removed in 1957 when the Malcolms moved to Duntrune Castle and the house has remained a ruin ever since. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
