Scope and Content No 42 Main Street, Bannockburn, Stirling This shows the cottages from the south-west. They were probably built as tenements, with small dwellings entered from a common stair in each block. The arched opening in the farther one is a 'pend' giving access to the yard at the rear of the building. Skeoch Mill was, like the neighbouring Royal George Mill built to take advantage of a fashion for tartan which followed the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1821, which featured revived tartans, many of which were probably woven in and around Bannockburn, whose industry benefited accordingly. These cottages were probably built to house hand-loom weavers by William Wilson, owner of the nearby Skeoch Mill, a wool-spinning mill, supplying yarn to hand-loom weavers employed by Wilson. These cottages were probably built at about the same time as the mill was rebuilt in 1822. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
