Scope and Content Plans of the second, third and attic floors and roof level, Arniston House, Midlothian This shows the upper floors of the main block of the house. The second floor features the upper level of the double-height hall, five bedrooms, a bathroom and the dining and drawing rooms. The third floor has six more bedrooms, two bathrooms and the old library (replaced by the new ground-floor library in 1868). The attics house the servants' rooms and the upper level of the old library. The roof plan shows the skylights which light the two staircases. The large numbers of bedrooms seen on this plan would be used by the landowner, his family, and their guests. Country house guests often stayed for several weeks, and the housekeeper would meet daily with the mistress of the house to confirm guest numbers to allow adequate supplies were bought in. Arniston House, the seat of the Dundas family, was built in the Palladian style from 1726 onwards by architect William Adam (1689-1748) on the site of a c.1600 U-plan tower-house. His son John (1721-92) added the west wing and orangery in 1753. The house was further altered during the 19th century, and comprises a central three-storeyed block with flanking two-storeyed service pavilions joined to the main building by two-storeyed links.
