Scope and Content Gardener's Cottage, Balmoral Estate, Aberdeenshire, from the east This single-storeyed cottage, set in a south-facing aspect beside the kitchen garden (left), is built from the same light-coloured local granite as the castle. It has an asymmetrical six-bayed front with 12-paned Georgian windows, and a small canopy, supported by timber brackets, above the front door. The Victorian glasshouse (left), a popular feature of large estates, has an ornate iron cresting running the length of the roof ridge, with an elaborate finial at the end. In 1855 when the castle was almost completed, Prince Albert laid out plans for the grounds. Trees were planted, and several acres of formal gardens, a sunken garden and a kitchen garden were laid out around the castle. A range of Victorian glasshouses were constructed to provide flowers and fruits for the table when the royal family were in residence. A large workforce of gardeners and labourers was required for daily maintenance, and this cottage may well have served as a bothy for the labourers who were employed in the kitchen garden and glasshouses to harvest the vegetables and fruits in the autumn. The Balmoral estate was bought in 1852 by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria at their own expense as a Highland retreat from the stresses of London life. Prince Albert initiated many improvements, including the building of a new holiday home, Balmoral Castle, in 1853-5, and put forward plans for a model estate with new houses and offices for estate workers and tenants. This cottage was probably built c.1855 as a bothy to house the gardeners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
