Scope and Content Gardener's Cottage, Balmoral Estate, Aberdeenshire, from the south-east This single-storeyed cottage, built from the same light-coloured local granite as the castle, stands in a pretty woodland setting close to the kitchen garden. It has an asymmetrical six-bayed front with rather large, 12-paned Georgian windows, and a small open porch above the front door (just visible above the greenhouse). The long low Victorian glasshouse (left) has an ornate iron cresting running the length of the roof ridge, and elaborate finials at either end. In 1855 when the castle was almost completed, Prince Albert turned his attention to laying out the grounds. Around the castle there were 120 acres of garden that sloped in a series of natural terraces towards the River Dee. Here, many trees were planted to give the castle shelter, and several acres of formal gardens, a sunken garden and a kitchen garden laid out. A range of Victorian glasshouses were constructed to provide flowers and fruits such as grapes, melons, cucumbers, bananas and pineapples for the castle when the royal family were in residence. A large staff of gardeners and labourers was recruited for day-to-day maintenance of the gardens and glasshouses under the supervision of the head gardener, William Paterson, who had been employed at Balmoral when the estate was bought by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1852. The Balmoral estate was bought in 1852 by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria at their own expense as a Highland retreat from the stresses of London life. Prince Albert initiated many improvements, including the building of a new holiday home, Balmoral Castle, in 1853-5, and put forward plans for a model estate with new houses and offices for estate workers and tenants. This cottage was built c.1855 as a bothy to house the gardeners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
