Scope and Content Oil & Tallow Works, No 270 Westmuir Street, Glasgow This shows the frontage to the lane off Quarrymuir Street from the south-west. The office and dwelling house are on the right, with the monopitch roof. The chimney served the boiler house, and is unusual in having a circular-section top on a square-section base. Glasgow's slaughterhouse in Bellgrove produced large volumes of animal fat which when refined produced tallow. The fact that the works also refined oil suggests that the tallow and oil were being used as lubricants. The firm also had works in Vinegarhill Street, Camlachie. This works was built in about 1909 for Cardno & Co, oil and tallow refiners. It consisted of a large single-storey block with a plain frontage to Westmuir Street, extending through to a lane off Quarrymuir Street, where there was an office and dwelling house.
