Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 768931

Scope and Content Carntyne Dyewood Mills, No 567 Shettleston Road, Glasgow This shows the west side of what was probably the 1886 block, built of red and white brick. The two-storeyed range in the background may well have been the original works of c.1883. The corrugated asbestos-clad block on the right is a mid-20th-century addition, probably a store. By 1970 this works was owned by the British Dyewood Co Ltd, and was still in production. In the 1950s this works processed most of the world's output of logwood, and also made fustic, a yellow dye for leather and wood, and tannic acid and tannin. The works has now closed and has been demolished. This works was founded in about 1883 by McArthur, Scott & Co, drysalters, dyewood and extract manufacturers, and additions were made in 1886 and 1911. The firm made extracts from imported exotic woods for use in dyeing and calico-printing, and also for tanning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
