Scope and Content Alexander's School, No 94 Duke Street, Glasgow This shows the school from the north-east. This was a remarkably large and fine school building for its period. Above the central arcade are heads of notable cultural figures, such as Homer, Milton, Shakespeare and Michelangelo. To the right is part of High Street Goods Station. This school was taken over by the School Board of Glasgow after the passing of the 1873 Education Act, and became known as Ladywell School. It was altered internally in 1924. After a period as a technical college annexe it was converted into a business centre, and still operates as such. This school was built in 1858 for R F & J Alexander, cotton thread manufacturers, whose mill was adjacent to the east. The school was designed by John Burnet, and was used to educate 'half-timers', older children who worked for half a day in the mill, and spent the other half at school.
