Scope and Content Tailoring Workshops, No 42 Spean Street, Glasgow This shows the main block from the south-east after it had been taken over by the South of Scotland Electricity Board as their central offices. They obscured the original decorative treatment of the panels below the windows, and added a new block, out of sight to the left in this view. This factory was American-inspired, with its flat roof and steel frame. It was set in extensive grounds, partly laid out as a landscape, and partly as recreation grounds. New building and car parks have obscured much of the original intention. The complex is now owned by Scottish Power. This factory was built in 1913-22 for Wallace, Scott & Co, who made rainwear with the brand name 'Dexter'. The building was designed by Sir J J Burnet, and has extensive glazing to suit its purpose. When completed it had a steamer-like chimney on top of the main block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
