Scope and Content Station, Glenfinnan, Highland This shows the platform shelter on the east-bound platform, with passengers awaiting a train to Fort William. Note the rhododendrons round the building, a distinctive feature of this station. These plants, from the Himalayan foothills, flourish in the mild, wet West Highland climate. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. This station is on the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. Concrete was extensively employed, as the local stone was unworkable.
