Scope and Content Station, Glenfinnan, Highland This shows the signal box on the west-bound platform. This, with its overhanging eaves is of a distinctive West Highland Extension Railway pattern, and is wooden, on a concrete base. The train is a Falkirk-Mallaig excursion, run by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. This station is on the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. Concrete was extensively employed, as the local stone was unworkable.
