Scope and Content Harbour and Piers, Mallaig, Highland This shows a deck view of a small Norwegian factory ship, which has bought fish from the local fleet, and is using machinery to gut and behead them prior to freezing for shipment to Norway. This was apparently a modest example of 'Klondyking', the direct sale of fish by the skipper of a boat to a factory ship, often in those days of Eastern European origin. It was particular popular with the herring and mackerel fleets, as these fish spoil quickly unless eaten or processed soon after being caught. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. It was built to provide a rail-linked terminus for steamer services to the Outer Isles, and to encourage the fishing industry, and a harbour was built as part of the scheme.
