Scope and Content Railway near Pennyvenie Colliery (Nos 2, 5 & 7), East Ayrshire This shows one of the larger locomotives, on a train of empty wagons, approaching the Pennyvenie pits. The locomotive was built in 1953 for the National Coal Board by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co Ltd. The wagon to the right contained extra coal for the locomotive. The Pennyvenie pits were the last deep mines in the Doon Valley, and did not close until 1979. They produced what was said to be the best house coal in Scotland. The Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group now owns part of the railway and operates trains on it on summer weekends. The Dalmellington Iron Co was founded in 1847 to exploit seams of coal and ironstone in and around the upper Doon valley. The smelting works was built at Waterside, and was linked to the pits which served it by a network of railways. This line was opened in 1884 when the Pennyvenie pits started production.
