Scope and Content Baron's Hall (dining room) from north-west, Taymouth Castle, Perth & Kinross This shows the Baron's Hall (dining room) on the first floor where the family and their guests would have consumed the meals prepared by the servants in the kitchen. The room has a ceiling modelled between 1809 and 1812 by Francis Bernasconi, painted glass lanterns made between 1815 and 1824 by W E Naish and a dado of antique carved panels. Thomas Bonnar (1810-73) redecorated this room, and the London decorators Crace & Son painted the ceiling with the Campbell clan crests for Queen Victoria's visit in 1842. The large Gothic chimneypiece (far left) has the Breadalbane family crest of a boar's head as a centrepiece. The Baron's Hall was one of the main state rooms which were located on the first floor of the main block. Grand room to impress important guests. Not where day to day dining was done. Other state rooms included the Banner Hall and Chinese Drawing Room. Taymouth Castle was built for the Campbells of Breadalbane and stands on the site of Balloch Castle, which was built c.1550. Taymouth's main block, built between 1802 and 1810, was designed by James Elliot (1770-1810) and the east wing, built between 1818 and 1821, was designed by William Atkinson (c.1773-1839). The west pavilion, built in the early 18th century, was designed by William Adam (1689-1748) and was altered by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855). The Mactaggart family bought the estate in 1922 and converted the castle into a hotel and the deer park into a golf course. The castle was a convalescent home during World War II and has had several uses until c.1983 when it became unoccupied. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
