Scope and Content Enclosure, Doon Hill, East Lothian The excavations revealed that the site had been in use for burial as well as for settlement. This square burial enclosure lay within the palisaded enclosure and contained a number of human cremations. The outline of the burial enclosure can be seen in the photograph, along with the excavated circular pits, which contained the cremation burials. Until the 1960s most excavations were undertaken using a grid of small square trenches. Brian Hope-Taylor was one of the pioneers of the modern technique of open area excavation, which dispensed with necessity for having small trenches. The large areas opened at Doon Hill allowed Hope-Taylor to obtain an overview of complete structures, such as this burial enclosure. In 1964-6, excavations by Brian Hope-Taylor on the top of Doon Hill revealed a palisaded enclosure surrounding the remains of two successive Dark Age timber halls - one built for a British chieftain, the other for an Anglo-Saxon landowner. Brian Hope-Taylor's work had a profound influence on the standards of archaeological excavations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
