Scope and Content View of waterwheel from south, Mill of Noth, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire Mill of Noth was built c.1800, with major additions in 1835, marked by an inscribed datestone above the waterwheel. This irregularly planned oatmeal mill contained one pair of millstones driven by a mid-breastshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel in halfway up one side). The mill closed in 1940 partly due to an infestation of rats from a nearby refuse dump. This shows the waterwheel still in place next to the mill. An iron framework provides a base for the wooden paddles. The wheel measures 0.89m wide and 3.55m in diameter. Water was channelled to hit the wheel in the middle of one side by means of a lade, supported on stone pillars, one of which can be seen on the right. Water to power the Mill of Noth came from a natural spring known as the Burn of Easaiche located beneath the waterwheel. This water supply was used by the miller and his family for drinking and washing until the mains supply was connected. Water was gathered from the lade and tailrace in the morning before sediment had been disturbed for washing, cooking and cleaning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
