Scope and Content Trough and garden, New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed, stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows the wooden trough which transfers water from the mill pond to the waterwheel. Water is drawn from Loch Kindar almost 1.5km away along a stream known as the Sheep Burn. A trap door in the lade regulates the flow of water onto the blades of the wheel, and can be operated from inside the mill. Waterwheels have been used for hundreds of years and can be divided into two types. The earliest are the horizontal mills with a wheel turned by a stream with its shaft turning the millstone above directly; the other type has a vertical wheel and drives the stones through a series of gears.
