Scope and Content Mill pond and sluice gate, New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed, stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows the mill pond which stores water fed by the 'Sheep Burn' from Loch Kindar over 1.5km away. When required, the sluice-gate is raised allowing water to pass along the lade towards the waterwheel. The lade is lined with stone. A platform for nesting ducks has been built in the centre of the pond. The miller has always been a vital part of community life, and thus enjoyed many privileges. Farmers would bring grain and oats for milling from which the miller took his 'multure', a percentage of the grain as payment. Working watermills are now a rarity in Scotland, as most modern milling is now done in large automated roller mills (which are not powered by water). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
