Scope and Content New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway from south-west New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows the mill with its raised lade on rubble supports (right) which carries water from the Mill Burn to the high breastshot waterwheel. Power from the wheel turns gears and belt-drives within the mill to power the millstones and machinery within. The whitewashed building (left) is the kiln for drying grain over a furnace, and is identifiable by its tall rooftop ventilator. The chimney on the far left of the photograph marks the area of the mill originally used as a dwelling house. Millers usually lived close by their mills in large houses, and were wealthy members of the community as they provided an essential service. This area now contains a visitor centre, and the mill can be seen in working condition once more. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
