Scope and Content Millstone maker's plate, New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows a cast iron ring around the central hole in a millstone. The plate is cast with the following words; 'W. J & T CHILD. MAKERS. LEEDS 1851'. A spindle would pass through the hole, and power from the waterwheel transferred to the runner (top) stone by means of gears and belt-drives. Scottish millstones from local quarries were cut with a roughened surface for grinding corn into coarse meal. For finer milling, special burrstones from France were imported and cut with grooves. These were very expensive, and local alternatives like Inverteil stones (from Fife) and Abbey Craig stones (from Stirlingshire) were sometimes used. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
