Scope and Content Old Millstones, New Abbey Mill, Dumfries & Galloway New Abbey Mill was built in the late 18th century, but stands on the site of a much older monastic mill. The three-storeyed, stone rubble building contains the miller's house, milling area powered by a pitch-back waterwheel, and a drying kiln topped by a circular ventilator with fish-shaped wind vane. The mill was restored to working order in 1982. This shows two old millstones leaning against the wall of the mill. The stone on the right has a cast inner ring which reads: 'W. J & T CHILD. MAKERS. LEEDS 1851'. Both have outer iron casings. Above the stones is a sash and case window, and, to the right, a door composed of wooden boards with large central keyhole and handle. Scottish millstones from local quarries were cut with a roughened surface for grinding corn into coarse meal. For finer milling, special burrstones from France were imported and cut with grooves. These were very expensive, and local alternatives like Inverteil stones (from Fife) and Abbey Craig stones (from Stirlingshire) were sometimes used. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
