Scope and Content Aerial view of Gartnavel Royal Hospital, No 1055 Great Western Road, Glasgow Gartnavel Royal Hospital was built in the 1840s and designed by Charles Wilson (1810-63), a Glasgow architect, influential in the development of the city. This imposing, Tudor-style institution superseded Glasgow's first Royal Hospital for lunatics in Parliamentary Road, designed by William Stark. This shows Wilson's two original main buildings (running diagonally through the centre of the photograph), joined by Sir John James Burnet's 1904 chapel, and further additions including the 1877 dining and recreational halls, Norman Dick's 1937 nurses' home, Henderson House, an 80-bed extension built in 1959 and a 1970 industrial and occupational therapy unit (top right). A growing awareness of the dreadful conditions in which lunatics were kept led to the foundation of Glasgow's first lunatic asylum in 1809, by public subscription organised by Robert McNair, a sugar refiner. This hospital was granted a Royal Charter in 1824 becoming the fourth of Scotland's seven Royal Asylums. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
