Scope and Content Aerial view of Gartloch Hospital, Garltoch Road, Glasgow Gartloch Hospital was opened in 1896 as the City of Glasgow District Asylum for 'pauper lunatics'. Designed by architects, Thomson & Sandilands, this vast, red sandstone institution, in Scots Baronial style, was typical of the type of asylum built at the turn of the 19th/20th century. Gartloch was closed in 1996. This shows the many buildings which made up this huge asylum. To the north-east, is the administration block, its entrance flanked by a pair of ornate towers. There were also four villas, linked by corridors, a new feature in asylum design, as was the self-contained hospital unit for other medical treatment. Glasgow's first lunatic asylum in Parliamentary Road was founded in the early 1800s and granted a Royal Charter in 1824. As the city expanded a new Royal Asylum at Gartnavel was built in 1841 but the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act forced the city also to build a District Asylum for its 'pauper lunatics'.
