Scope and Content View of inscribed window sill above waterwheel, Mill of Noth, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire Mill of Noth was built c.1800, with major additions in 1835, marked by an inscribed datestone above the waterwheel. This irregularly planned oatmeal mill contained one pair of millstones driven by a mid-breastshot waterwheel (water hits the wheel halfway up one side). The mill closed in 1940 partly due to an infestation of rats from a nearby refuse dump. This shows an inscribed window sill above the waterwheel. It reads; 'J. 1835. S' The inscription refers to the rebuilding of this part of the mill in 1835, and the initials probably relate to the Stewart family who were millers here until 1925. The carved stone demonstrates the owner's sense of pride in the rebuilt mill. The waterwheel at Mill of Noth drove the millstones, the threshing machine, a fanner (which cleaned the grains), and oatmeal sieve, a sack hoist, and a grain bruiser (which made animal feed). The water supply was the Burn of Easaiche, which also provided drinking and washing water for the miller and his family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
