Scope and Content Doune Castle, Stirling, from the west Doune Castle, a high-walled and formidable fortress, stands on a narrow finger of land at the meeting of the Ardoch Water and River Teith. It was built in the late 14th and early 15th centuries for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the most powerful figure in the Scotland of his day. This photograph of the castle was taken c.1885 by Erskine Beveridge. The height of the castle is impressive, with walls, rising from a sloping plinth, of coursed sandstone rubble. To the left is the gatehouse tower, the tallest part of the structure, which was built as the owner's residence. It has four storeys and an attic, and a five-storeyed circular tower which stands against its north-east angle. To the right of the gatehouse, and standing at half its height, is the long range that contains the great hall. Partially obscured behind the tree is the kitchen tower, a four-storeyed tower which extends west behind the west gable of the great hall. In the late 14th century Doune Castle lay in a strategic position at the crossroads of central Scotland, less than 10km from the royal stronghold at Stirling Castle. The castle was well defended on the east, south and west sides, with curtain walls which were over 2m thick and 12m high. These walls were parapeted, with circular turrets at the corners and mid-points on the east and south sides, and had a continuous wall-head walk. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
