Scope and Content Largo Parish Church, Upper Largo, Fife Largo Parish Church stands within its churchyard high above the surrounding village of Upper Largo. It was rebuilt in 1816-17 to designs by the architect, Alexander Leslie, incorporating the 17th-century chancel and tower of the original church on the site. This photograph was taken in 1889 by Erskine Beveridge. The church is cross-shaped (cruciform) in plan. The chancel (right), dating from 1623, forms the east arm of the cross, and has a crowstepped intake two-thirds of the way up its east gable. The west end of the chancel is straddled by a square tower, dating from 1628, with a parapet added in 1816-17, and a dumpy octagonal spire topped by a gilded weathercock. The nave (left) and south transept (centre), both built in 1816-17, are remarkably similar in style to the original 17th-century chancel. The churchyard contains several interesting gravestones and memorials, including an 18th-century table stone (right of south transept), and a headstone of c.1770 which commemorates the children of John Fortune. The stone bears an inscription to the children on the back, and full-length portraits of Fortune and his wife on the front, both pictured standing on skulls. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
