Scope and Content Interior of Crichton Memorial Church from west, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Crichton Royal Hospital was founded in 1839 by the Trustees of Dr James Crichton (1765-1823), a local man who had amassed a large fortune in the East. From the start, Crichton Royal Hospital successfully pursued an enlightened approach to the care and treatment of the mentally ill. This shows the inside of Crichton Memorial Church, built to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the hospital by Dr James Crichton's widow, Elizabeth. Designed by Edinburgh architect, Sydney Mitchell, this magnificent Gothic-style church seats 400 people and was dedicated in October 1897. The cost of the church when building began in 1888 was estimated at £5,000. By the time of its completion in 1897, the cost had jumped to £30,000. In 1895, Sydney Mitchell proposed the addition of a spire on the building's square tower but the Board of Directors decided against spending the necessary £1,000.
