Scope and Content Crichton Royal Farm, Glencaple Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway, from north-west Crichton Royal Hospital, which opened in 1839, was the seventh Royal Asylum for the mentally ill to be founded in Scotland. From the start, it pursued enlightened and progressive policies towards the care and treatment of its patients, ensuring its success, its rapid expansion and the high regard in which it was held. This shows a section of the farm steading, built in 1890, as part of the hospital's policy to aid recovery through occupational therapy. 80 male patients were housed in the steading and worked on the farm, which not only experimented in new methods of production but also won prizes at local agricultural shows. Brownhall Farm, bought in 1867, was the first expansion of Crichton Royal's original 40-acre site. The farm provided work for patients, many of whom came from local agricultural communities. Originally designed for poor patients, the scheme was so successful it was enlarged to include private patients. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
