Scope and Content Village Street, Corrie, Arran, North Ayrshire Corrie, a pretty hamlet with a small harbour overlooking the Firth of Clyde, lies on the north-east coast of Arran approximately 10km north of Brodick. This photograph of the main street was taken c.1890 by Erskine Beveridge. The village is a line of single-storeyed, whitewashed cottages, mostly detached or semi-detached, which stretches along one side of the shore road which runs through the village. Most have a three-bayed front, with stone walls and slated roofs. The donkey, blinkered and carrying a pair of baskets (panniers), was probably used to transport goods or materials to and from the harbour. In the 1890s, the main industries in Corrie were farming and fishing. Sandstone was quarried in the hills behind the village, and much of the stone was used in the construction of the Crinan Canal. The stone was shipped from the harbour, and coal was imported. Corrie was also a popular destination for holidaymakers from Glasgow, and many of the cottages were let in the summer.
