Scope and Content Harbour, Corrie, Arran, North Ayrshire Corrie, a pretty hamlet with a small harbour overlooking the Firth of Clyde, lies on the north-east coast of Arran approximately 10km north of Brodick. This photograph of the harbour was taken c.1890 by Erskine Beveridge. The village is a line of single-storeyed, whitewashed cottages with low drystone walls marking their front boundaries, which stretches along one side of the shore road which runs through the village. The harbour, originally built for the shipment of sandstone quarried in the hills behind the village, has a small stone quay which provided moorings for local fishing boats. Larger vessels had to anchor offshore, while their passengers and goods were transferred to the quay by rowing boats. The construction of wooden poles on the left was used for drying fishing nets. In the 1890s, the main industries on the island were farming and fishing. Because of its mild climate, Arran was also popular with holidaymakers from Glasgow, who travelled by paddle steamer to Brodick Pier, or were ferried ashore at Corrie. (Passengers with large pieces of baggage or bicycles had to disembark at Brodick). Many of the cottages in the village were let in the summer to holidaymakers, and the village became a popular haunt for artists, walkers and climbers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
