Scope and Content Part of steading from north-west, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was bought by Walter Gowans, a master mason, in the early 19th century. His son, Sir James Gowans, a prominent Scottish architect, railway engineer and quarry manager, rebuilt and enlarged it as a stylish country home designed on a theme of squares and fixed angles. This shows part of the farm steading designed by Sir James. The building has a slate roof and decorative corbelling at the eaves, characteristic of his flamboyant style. For many years he was a quarry manager, gaining a wealth of knowledge about local stone and what could be achieved with it using skilled craftsmanship. Like other Victorian cities, Edinburgh experienced a major building boom when its population leapt from 162,000 in 1830 to 270,000 in 1890. As the city spread, Sir James Gowans repudiated the square cut simplicity of its Georgian architecture in favour of a more elaborate, individual, Gothic style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
