Scope and Content Detail of steading from south-west, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, 9.6km south-west of Linlithgow, is a fine example of the work of Sir James Gowans (1821-90), a prominent Scottish architect. In the mid-19th century, Gowans redesigned and enlarged Gowanbank as his country seat applying his own, highly individual, arguably eccentric, Gothic-style architecture. This shows the use Gowans made of decorative mosaic-patterned masonry work in the design of this mid-19th-century steading which is a fine example of his work and the high quality of craftsmanship upon which he insisted. His desire for symmetry is also demonstrated in the central door flanked by matching windows. Gowans designed and built Rockville, his Edinburgh home in Napier Road, in the Merchiston district of the city, in 1858. This Gothic-inspired masterpiece, demolished in 1966, was elaborately decorated using a mosaic of different types of Scottish stone and an ornate trellis of ironwork round the roof.
