Scope and Content Farmhouse, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian, from east Gowanbank, some 9.6km south-west of Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90). Architect, quarry master, railway engineer and politician, this energetic Victorian pioneered a new architectural style based on fine craftsmanship and the innovative use of building materials. This shows part of the additions made to the farmhouse by Gowns in the mid-19th century. These consisted of a large U-plan range in Gothic style with unusual, decorative masonry work. The hooded dormer windows on this side of the house contrast with the stark simplicity of those on the original house. In the late 1830s, Gowans was apprenticed to David Bryce, a prominent Edinburgh architect. Reacting against the Classical simplicity of Edinburgh's New Town, Gowans chose a completely different, ornate style, exemplified in the design of his Edinburgh home, Rockville, a Gothic-inspired masterpiece, built in 1858.
